Safety Tools

We are a majority-queer actual play production company founded on the principle of creating a safe, inviting, and inclusive space for all comers over the age of 18. As such, we include safety disclaimers at the beginning of all of our streams, encouraging listeners and players to prioritize their mental health above all.

Our shows include a wide range of topics and themes, ranging from violence, to trauma, sex, and heavy social topics which may make some players and listeners uncomfortable. To grapple with these difficult topics and situations, we employ the following tools:

X-Cards: All players, guest stars, and Storytellers have access to the use of an X-Card, which can be displayed either in the game’s general chat on Discord, or be sent to the Storyteller running the game when a participant feels uncomfortable. When this is thrown, everything in the scene comes to a stop and the discomfort is addressed in the moment. Resolution of the offending topic may range from retconning the scene all together, to talking out an alternative path for the scene to have taken with no roleplay.

Lines and Veils: All of Hallowed Haven’s Storytellers are required to utilize a tool called Lines and Veils. They must provide all players and guest stars access to a form listing a large number of potentially sensitive topics and themes. Players are required to rate each topic from Red (topic is not an option), Yellow (topic must be handled lightly and may not include details), to Green (anything goes). These answers are aggregated afterward and posted for the entire cast to see (no names are included in the final list).

Session 0: Before all of our games, Storytellers, Players, and Guest Stars are required to participate in at least one Session 0. During these times, characters, themes, schedules, and more are discussed at length. All Session 0s are attended by a member of staff to provide any necessary conflict resolution and support to Storytellers and Participants in the event such is needed. All of our Session 0s are recorded and these are typically shared on our Patreon as part of our “behind the scenes” reward, but participants are allowed to request that the recording not be released.

Highs and Lows: At the close of every session, Storytellers lead the participants of the session in a round of what we call “highs and lows”. Everyone goes over the things they loved about the session, as well as anything they might not have enjoyed about the session. These are typically shared on our Patreon as part of our “behind the scenes” reward, but participants are allowed to request that the recording not be released.
